Private detective Tree Callister is in big trouble.

For starters, a towering, baseball bat-wielding woman appears to be intent on killing him.

Then the beautiful wife of a disgraced media mogul hires Tree because she believes her husband is trying to murder her. In fact, she may be trying to murder him.

Added to that, Tree's son Chris unexpectedly appears, accompanied by his alluring wife, chased by a couple of thugs who want half a million dollars.

Then there are the dead bodies that keep showing up every time Tree turns around. Not to mention the police who charge him with being an accomplice to one murder, and accuse him of committing another.

And we won't even talk about what happens when Tree encounters a couple of hungry alligators. Ron Base's new mystery thriller, The Sanibel Sunset Detective Returns, is set against the gorgeous backdrop of Florida's Sanibel and Captiva Islands. It is as chock full of breath-taking action and unexpected plot twists as his previous Tree Callister novel, The Sanibel Sunset Detective.

The Sanibel Sunset Detective is back, more exciting than ever!

"Tonight he had characters named Slippery on his trail and beautiful women with opaque eyes and steely determination handing him envelpes stuff with cash. No time for the past with a present like this."
With lines like this, you think of Dashielle Hammond, and it's a good bet this author will have more great lines.
Captiva Island, on the Gulf of Mexico, features tourists, ice cream and volunteering for the upcoming Kiwanis spaghetti dinner. Tree Callister would have it easy, if he didn't keep getting involved with missing people, jealous spouses, dead people—but then what would he do for fun? It sure isn't the money, and besides, it's his job as the only PI on the island.
His next case is fortunately going to pay well, unfortunately it's attached to a dangerous woman. And so begins this well written, smartly plotted, dialogue was witty and poignant. Characters like Slippery and Fern, a super sized "woman" who decides she's in love with him—married or not, or whether or not she wants to kill him is still up for grabs. As PI mysteries go, I can now honestly say that Ron Base if my new favorite mystery writer—okay, guy mystery writer. If you like Simon Wood, or Tim Hallinan, you'll love this book, and probably all his others as well.

The Sanibel Sunset Detective Returns Ron Base 9780973695557 Books Reviews

How much trouble can happen to poor Tree and from how many different directions? Is there no one out there who isn't trying to hurt our "bumbling gumshoe?" Ride (or limp) along with Tree to see how crazy family and life can get for a private detective (?) named "Tree Callister," you'll be glad you did.
What started as a free purchase, has made me a true fan. Tree is likable, fallible, humble, loyal and not necessarily great at his new career, but he's sticking it out. He isn't over complicated as a detective, just keeps plodding along and hopes to do what is right in the world. I'm on the third installment, hope Tree's run is long.
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ron Base at Ft. Myers Bach Public Library on Feb. 21, 2014. I had already read this book and truly enjoyed it so very much. The characters are very believable and down to earth. I like the fact that there is No over use of foul language.
Ron writes a most wonderful book about a man who becomes a private detective in a place where there is truly no real gritty crime. The main character gets himself into some awkward situations but always comes out on top.
Thank you Ron for these most enjoyable books. I look forward to reading many more of them in the future.
Thank you for a great visit.
This is the second in the series that I've read. I enjoyed this one as much as the first and am looking forward to reading the next one!

The characters are funny and likable, and it's just good fun to curl up with this book and get lost in the adventures on Sanibel Island. Again with this second book, I was disappointed when it ended, but I can look forward to the next one arriving.
When I read the title I figured it was another eccentric elderly lady story, but it was free so I gave it a try anyway. And I'm glad I did.

It has a whole cast of characters to entertain you. From the guy who tells about his encounters with old-time movie stars to the woman who becomes Tree's guardian angel, the characters have a real feel to them.

If there are errors, I missed them because I was involved in the story. There were no graphic sex scenes, though it was implied. The objectionable language was fairly minimal.

I will definitely be reading another in this series.
A hidden gem because I would have never found this book hadn't I taken the time to insert other books I enjoyed into the search engine one by one to discover what similar books shown up. Strange characters abounded in this book including a 60-year old detective whom got licensed by taking courses by mail, a daughter-in-law who was a playboy pin-up, and an ex-con whom decided to become a woman and was falling in love with the aforementioned detective whom was already married (weird!) Not everything about the book worked out for me (would have liked the detective's wife, Freddie, to have had a larger part in the book and I will never understand why the protagonist was left alive nearby the alligators) but somehow the author managed to pull it all together in a wild romp (much like "Brothers and Bones") and made it a highly entertaining read, nonetheless. I'm glad I grabbed the sequel as well, and am looking forward to reading that, too!
I had never heard of this author nor series before I picked this one up from the top 100 free list. I'm really glad I did! Ron Base does an exemplary job with this stand-alone mystery. The book is well written with few mistakes. He gives us believable characters to love or hate and a protagonist who puts others before himself.

Set primarily on Sanibel and Captiva Islands on Florida's Gulf coast, his writing puts you in the middle of this tropical paradise. I was transported back to the Sanibel I remembered from my youth, when you could only get to the islands by car ferry and the beaches were long, white and uncrowded...a time long past.

I enthusiastically recommend this one to all lovers of good writing, great settings, memorable characters and mystery. You won't be disappointed, I assure you.
