What’s a guy to do when he comes home to stay and the girl he wants can’t wait to leave town?
On April 24, 1962, U.S. Air Force Captain Samuel J. Lewis returns home to small Rockbridge, Texas. Six years older, Sam is the boy who moved four houses down when Sarah Jordan was ten. A teenager who nicknamed her Tomboy and teased her like an older brother. That boy is now a handsome military man who makes her heart race, but what does she know of love or life?
After his years away, Sam finds himself drawn to Sarah. The sassy, funny girl he used to tease has grown up into a beautiful charmer with wit and intelligence who challenges him like no other woman. Sarah’s frequent reminders that she’s leaving Rockbridge to attend nursing school, along with her encouragement to date other girls in town, unsettle him.
During the eventful summer of 1962, their friendship grows deeper and blossoms into love. Sam knows he can’t hold Sarah back from achieving her dreams. When an unexpected financial gift gives her the needed funds to enter nursing school, they face saying good-bye earlier than expected. Are Sam and Sarah destined to be together or go their separate ways?
The exciting prequel to the popular contemporary Christian romance series, The Lewis Legacy Series, Prelude is the love story of Samuel J. Lewis and Sarah Jordan, parents to the core character of the series. Prelude lends insights into the Lewis family history in this heartfelt story of family, friendship, and love. A story of never letting go of our dreams, and how faith, sacrifice, and trusting our lives to the Lord’s guidance will always triumph over our human fears and temptations.
Prelude Prequel to The Lewis Legacy Series edition by JoAnn Durgin Religion Spirituality eBooks
What a fun, romantic, nostalgic, and spirit-filled book! It made me laugh out loud, it made me smile, it made me say “awe”, it brought tears to my eyes, it made me think of the times I shared with my grandparents, and it made me consider scripture as it pertains to life. Does it get any better than that? This is a prequel, but yet, it didn’t seem out of place after reading the other books in the series. In fact, it complimented them. If you’ve not read the other books in the Lewis Legacy Series, I’d start with this one; it will set the stage for the future books. If you’ve already read the other books, read this one too; it will complement the other stories and tie a lot of things together.
I love the scripture choices the author uses throughout the book. They not only give the story great spiritual backing, but they also are scriptures that are so applicable to our everyday lives. I found myself considering how they applied to my life and my situations.
The depth of the characters pulls you into their lives as if they were real people. I especially enjoyed the deep relationship the main characters had with God and the way they so naturally lived it through their lives. The story is so well written and so descriptive, that I could picture every scene in my mind as though it was a movie, flowing seamlessly from one scene to the next.

Prelude Prequel to The Lewis Legacy Series edition by JoAnn Durgin Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This is actually the first book by this author that I have read, and I LOVED it!
The book takes place in the 1960's. Sam has just come home after serving in the air force. Sarah's sister, Tess, wants to go out with him, but Sam is more interested in Sarah (several years younger than him). The two kick off a renewed friendship, though this time it's not teenage-kid (big brother), it's man and woman.
The author slowly takes us on a journey as their friendship blossoms into something else.. Sarah is strongly independent and has a goal of nursing school she wants to meet. She can't let Sam or anything else stand in her way. But the lack of money may keep her from filling her dream.
The author continues to take us on this journey throughout the book. Both Sam an Sarah have small issues to overcome. Other key characters add spice to the story. I especially liked Tess and her father's disapproval of her behavior at a dinner. I liked that physical attraction was allowed, but kept clean and in a Christian perspective. I love watching Sam and Sarah grow not only physically and emotionally closer, but also spiritually. I loved watching them pray together.
This was one of those books that, when reading the last page, I sighed and wished it were longer! It was THAT good for me!
I got this novel quite a long time ago but had not found the chance to read it until recently. I kept looking at the cover and telling myself I needed to read it, but other books, by necessity, had to come first. I finally had a free moment to pick up something from my backlist to-be-read pile and Joann won first prize, or maybe I did.
I expected with the .5 and a name like Prelude for this to be a novella and fully intended to finish it in a night, boy was I surprised when I read a few hours and had only made it about a fourth of the way! Usually, I look up that sort of thing, but as I said, I'd had this one a while so I just picked it up. I was not disappointed that I was wrong, it just took me longer to read than it otherwise would have. There is such depth within the story that I was easily able to go a few weeks between setting it down and picking it back up. My mind would get right back into the story with ease.
Joann weaves a pleasing hero and a strong heroine in Prelude. Both have their faults and I love that they are "human" enough to admit to there being physical temptations in budding relationships. I also love that this novel shows them dealing with it in healthy, normal ways. This was an excellent start to a series that is (at the time of this review) into its seventh novel, so should keep anyone who has just discovered it busy with good reads for a while. I know I will be.
JoAnn Durgin is a gifted author. She can weave a story line between multiple characters and books like no other author I've read. Predule is a prequel to the Lewis Legacy Series and a very enjoyable read. It's the story of how Sam Lewis Jr's mother (Sarah) and father (Sam Sr.) meet and fall in love. Sarah and Sam started out as neighbors and friends even with a six year age difference. Sam went away to war while Sarah blossomed into a young woman of faith who wants to leave town and get her nursing degree to travel the world and help others. However...when Sam returns and see's grown up Sarah sparks fly and the close knit community gets to watch their home town hero fall hopelessly in love with the spunky waitress of their local diner. It has all the ingredients you want in an inspirational love story like characters with encouraging faith, just enough romantic tension to keep you reading but not wear you out and a happy ending that leaves you wanting more great stories from JoAnn. This book stands alone but if you have not read the Lewis Legacy Series you will definately want to after reading Prelude!
