“Gold will not always get you good soldiers, but good soldiers can get you gold.” Niccolò Machiavelli
Recent Academy graduate Lieutenant Hal Slater is traveling first class to a cushy first assignment when he is suddenly preempted into a new detachment headed for a wild frontier world. Captain John Christian Falkenberg is forming a new unit from conscripts, guard house scrapings, and the remnants of decimated units, and has the authority to scoop up junior officers wherever he can find them. Hal is caught in that scoop. Falkenberg and three companies of CoDominium Line Marines are being sent to a frontier planet that had requested – and needed – a regiment. There will be no more reinforcements, and the whole structure of civilization is threatened.
Even the planetary commandant believes this assignment will be beyond the Marines’ capabilities, but the Line Marine tradition does not allow them to give up without trying. Falkenberg does the best he can against a force of bandits, pirates, and desperate refugees, and Hal Slater is thrust into command in his first battle. As the campaign continues Slater finds personal reasons to become deeply involved in a fight that will test the honor of the CoDominium Marines.
From West of Honor
“Colonel Harrington shook his head slowly. “Governor, everything you said about the service is true. We’re used. They use us to bash heads so that some senator’s nephew can make a mega-credit. They hand people a raw deal and then call on us to make the victims stay in the game. Most of the time we have to take it. It doesn’t mean we like it much. Once in a while, just every now and then, the Fleet gets a chance to put something right after you civilians mess it up. We don’t pass up such chances.”
“A military novel of the future as it ought to be told – by a man who knows not just the military and the future but the great art of storytelling.” Gordon R. Dickson
WEST OF HONOR eBook Jerry Pournelle
There are two listings in the Kindle store for West of Honor that are the same except for the price. At this time this one is $3.99 and the other one is $6.99 so go with this one. It's really too bad that The Prince is not available anymore for Kindle since for $5.00 you got the first four books of the CoDominium series. Even the publisher, Baen Ebooks, doesn't offer it anymore. Strange for such an immensely popular series, arguably Pournelle's best work as well.As the beginning to the Falkenberg storyline this book is just right, except for the crux of the planet Arrarat's problems, which is the convict population. We're supposed to believe that the Earth government, the CoDominium, would even think about sending Earth's criminal population to a new world, or that they could when they don't even own or control it. That of course ruins it for the colonists, but provides the rationale for sending in the Marines led by Falkenberg, and thus his story begins.
So this book is essential if you want to read the entire series.

WEST OF HONOR eBook Jerry Pournelle Reviews
Our hero has too much of the "Who - Me? Am I that good?" innocence - sort of like Johnny Rico in Starship Troopers. Still, a good war story with a few plot twists that are not foreseeable until well into the story, exciting and realistic descriptions of future combat from a foot soldier's perspective. I enjoyed reading the book.
First read this as a teenager, I'm steel rereading it 40 years later.
A classic military scifi, short on the science, long on the military. This starts the John Christian saga which is best appreciated by reading The Prince...unfortunately unavailable electronically or new hardcover.
But bought it again to read on the go...
"West of Honor" is one of my favourite military sci-fi stories; though the sci-fi element is very much in the background.
Having been a "newlie" lieutenant myself I can confirm that the thoughts of the lead character about being "surplus to requirements" around a group of experienced NCOs ring true! Likewise the camaraderie of infantry units is reflected very well too.
This is a ripping yarn about small unit combat, tempered by a sobering injection of comment on why, and for what, soldiers fight. The ambiguity of why the Line Marines get deployed is too close to our own reality...
I particularly liked Jerry Pournelle's afterword to this edition (written in 2011) - and agree that although the "real-world" premise of the CoDominion's creation is now false this series of books will always be regarded as classics of the genre.
Whole-heartedly recommended.
This book is the first part of a series known as Falkenberg's Legion.
Pournelle is at his best in this series of novels.
Indeed, he is down-right prophetic with the final book in the series, published in '93, in that the recent raid by Al Qaeda from Libya into Algeria and the mass murder of the gas-drilling compound falls right into the final book of the series, Prince of Sparta and the raid the Helots of the Spartan National Liberation Army conduct on the mining operation insiders assisting the terrorists, mass murder of innocents, rape, pillage, plunder, etc.
Jerry Pournelle is a giant in Science Fiction and his CoDominium Universe is just what a Science Fiction fan could hope for. When first written it was seen as a possible future, but with the fall of the Soviet Union that possibility is gone. However, that does not detract from the story. What is a little more suspension of disbelief when it comes to Science Fiction. In the world of ebook Science Fiction there are a lot of Pournelle wantabes. Some better than others. Jerry Pournelle is a standard setter. His equals in the genre are Robert Heinlein who wrote STARSHIP TROOPERS and Joe Halderman who wrote FOREVER WAR. WEST OF HONOR is a great story.
There is not much to be said except for how relevant it is today.
We are in the middle of a 17 year war and the only thing the troops have is an esprit de Corp.
Politics be damned, we are killing our best and brightest to support the main suppliers of opium in the world and loyal troops are dying for the right of a local warlord to continue poisoning our people.
I hope we wake up in time, if the Earth will give us time!
